Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition : Why? Fritz Reiner's 1957 performance with the CSO sets the standard. Absolutely brilliant. The sound clarity is astonishing. MP3 available.
Shostakovich: Symphonies No. 5 & 9/Haitink : Why? Superb interpretation and superb recording. Great reference CD for high end sound systems. The Fifth is gorgeously recorded. Haitink's performance is bold and heartfelt. The bare landscape of the first movement, with its lonely oboe solos, leads into the very Mahlerian second movement with ease. The Largo is introverted but poignant, with handsome, sustained pianissimo playing, and the finale has great energy. Overall, it's second to none. MP3 available.
Tchaikovsky: Symphonies No 4, 5, & 6/Karajan, Berlin PO : Why? Individually each of these masterpieces stands on it's own with the best, so a value-priced-compilation is just too good to pass up. These are exceptionally well played, exciting versions of the composer's three most popular symphonies, and although Karajan recorded each of them four or five times, this least expensive compliation is still the one to get. MP3 available.
